About the August Smart Lock
Hey, so with holidays coming up, or if you’re just out a lot, having your home secure and easy to get into is a big deal, right? Like, being able to unlock your door from far away, or let someone in, and know what’s happening. That’s just what people expect now. So, I’ve been checking out this August Wi-Fi Smart Lock, the 4th Gen one. I wanted to see if it’s really worth it for homes, especially if you travel a lot or have people coming and going. I looked at how it actually works and what people say about it.
Okay, so what is it? It’s pretty cool because it basically makes your old deadbolt smart without changing how your door looks from the outside. You just stick it on the inside of your door, over your existing lock. No one even knows it’s there from the street. The best part? It has Wi-Fi built in. That means you don’t need an extra ‘hub’ or anything, which is common with other smart locks. You just use the August app on your phone. You can lock or unlock your door from anywhere. You can also give temporary keys to friends or pet sitters, and see who’s coming and going. It runs on four AA batteries, which last maybe 3 to 6 months. The app will even tell you when they’re getting low.
Now, about the price. It’s not the cheapest lock out there. You’re probably looking at around $200 to $250. But, remember how I said it has built-in Wi-Fi? That’s a big part of why. Other smart locks often make you buy a separate little gadget, a ‘bridge,’ to get Wi-Fi, and that can add another $50 to $100. So, while it seems more upfront, you’re actually saving on that extra piece. It’s definitely a ‘premium’ item, but you get a lot for it. If you’re thinking about it, keep an eye out during sales like Black Friday or Prime Day. You might snag a good deal then.
I even looked at it next to some other smart locks, like the Schlage Encode, to get a better idea.
Honestly, I think this August lock is one of the best out there, especially if you want to control things from afar and connect it to your other smart home stuff. That built-in Wi-Fi really makes a difference – it’s just so much easier to set up and use. And I love that it doesn’t mess with how your door looks from the outside. If you travel a lot for holidays, it’s super helpful. You get to control who comes in, see exactly when they do, and even know if your door is actually closed and locked with something called DoorSense. If you have a rental property, managing keys for guests would be a breeze. It is a bit pricey, and it doesn’t have a keypad built-in, which some people might want. But for its strong app control, how easy it is to install, and all its features, I’d say it’s a really good investment for a modern home. If you care about convenience, security, and smart tech without changing your door’s look, I’d totally recommend it.

Setting it up is really simple too. You don’t need a professional. It’s made for regular deadbolts in most homes. All you do is take off the thumbturn part on the inside of your door and put the August lock there instead. Your outside lock and keys stay exactly the same. Seriously, it only takes like 15 minutes with just a screwdriver. Super easy way to make your home smarter and more secure.
